Gen Z Mindset: Fun at Work

How redefining "fun at work" as purpose, connection, and light-heartedness can help teams thrive.

Team members having a collaborative and enjoyable meeting

What do you think about the phrase "I want to have fun at work"? It's a sentiment that's been making its rounds lately, especially when you speak to young professionals about their ideal work environment.

So, before we dismiss "fun at work" as something silly or unprofessional, let's zoom in on it and what it can actually mean.

How we often see fun at work

Since the early 2010s, tech startups and social media have shaped the popular image of "fun at work": table tennis in the break room, a fridge stocked with free drinks, and pizza-and-beer Fridays after a long week.

These perks are eye-catching for sure, but they've also skewed the perception of what fun it is at work. They make it seem like fun is a superficial add-on to work culture rather than something meaningful, more of a cornerstone.

Fun at work isn't about gimmicks. It's about how people feel when they show up to work every day.

Why fun at work matters

The Oxford English Dictionary defines fun as "light-hearted pleasure, enjoyment, or amusement." On the surface, this might sound trivial.

But when people have fun at work, there are real physical and psychological benefits that contribute to a healthier work life. In general, fun at work makes people feel good, generating energy that is put towards working more productively, which ultimately makes people feel good, which generates energy, which... well, you get the gist.

Define what fun at work means for your team

So, it is time we left table tennis behind and define for us and our teams what fun at work means. At Young Heroes, we have decided that fun (one of our core values) at works means:

Working in your strength

Doing tasks you enjoy and excel at, which creates a sense of fulfillment and pride.

Building relationships

Having the time and space to share a social conversation with a colleague and share a good laugh.

Feeling safe

Feeling safe enough to be yourself, to make mistakes, and to find humor in those mistakes after you've learned from them.

Celebrating small wins

Spending time high-fiving our team (not necessarily in the literal but figurative sense) and recognizing small achievements like a task well executed or mistake well-reflected.

Your Role as a Manager

As a manager, you have the power to shape how fun manifests in your team. It doesn't mean planning elaborate events or investing in expensive perks. Instead, focus on fostering an environment where employees can enjoy their work and each other. Here are a few practical ways to start:

1

Encourage authenticity

Allow people to bring their full selves to work, quirks and all. Embrace the difference in how everyone in your team is wired.

2

Promote balance

Respect your team's time and well-being, so they have the energy to enjoy their work. That includes keeping an eye on their energy givers and takers. Some tasks just need to get done – also if they are not fun. Simply ensure your team keeps the balance.

3

Share the real story

Share your own moments of humor or lightness, especially in regard to making mistakes - it shows your team (and especially young professionals) that these setbacks can happen, and we can grow from them.

Fun at work isn't a frivolous concept, it isn't the opposite of professionalism; it's a vital ingredient for thriving teams.

By redefining fun as purpose, connection, and light-heartedness, you're not just making work more enjoyable - you're creating a culture where young professionals want to stay, grow, and contribute.

So, the next time you hear someone say, "I want to have fun at work," don't dismiss it. Instead, ask yourself: What can I do to make that happen? Because when your team is having fun, they're not just working - they're growing.
